Today's snow accumulations from the fourth nor'easter to hit the Lower Hudson Valley this month have been reduced slightly, as forecasters back away from earlier predictions of as much as 16 inches in some areas.

And while most of Weschester and Rockland were feeling the brunt of the storm by mid-afternoon, meteorologists said Putnam and the northern part of the Lower Hudson Valley will not escape and should to get hit later this evening.

Accuweather meteorologist John Gresiak said this afternoon that the area is likely to get 6 to 8 inches of snow.

Faye Morrone, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service, said southern Westchester could get about a foot of snow, while northern and western parts of the Lower Hudson Valley will likely get 8-10 inches.

New Rochelle had 5 inches of snow shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to National Weather Service snowfall reports. White Plains and Hastings-on-Hudson had 4.5 inches as of 3 p.m., Ardsley 4 inches as of 4 p.m. and Rye Brook 3.5 inches as of 3:10 p.m. and Chestnut Ridge 3 inches as of 3 p.m.

Wind gusts up to 40 mph are expected to continue to blow through the area, Gresiak said.

Both meteorologists expect the snow to fall through the evening and taper off after midnight.

In Putnam, no snow had fallen in Mahopac or Brewster by 1:30 p.m, but was expected to get up to 10 inches by morning.

The storm has given meteorologists fits since they started tracking it last week. The pockets of heaviest snowfall continue to move, both meteorologists said. Predicting where they might end up and how much snow could fall has been difficult, Gresiak said.
"I don't even know what nor'easter means," said Brian Worthington, who was waiting at the White Plains train station Wednesday afternoon for a trip to Manhattan. Worthington is on vacation from sunny California. "We left 82 degrees to come to 32 degrees."

Worthington said he's visited Rockefeller Center, the Empire State Building and the 9/11 memorial and museum so far, and was heading to Central Park today.

"We did the whole New York tourist thing," he said. "We love the snow."
